I initially hesitated to share the following information with you about a new book on Fibromyalgia, primarily because I only know of it from a press release I received. I have not read the book. But then I remembered that knowledge is power, and the more resources we have at our disposal, the more options we have to chose from. Please do not take my sharing of this information as an endorsement of any kind. Read it for yourself, and if you are interested there is a link to the authors website with more information about his practice and philosophy.
Here is the press release:
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (PRINT READY ATTACHMENT INCLUDED)
The Missing Pieces of the Fibromyalgia Puzzle
“Perhaps the most sensible book on fibromyalgia ever written” according to Frederick Wolfe, M.D., Master, American College of Rheumatology and lead author of The American College of Rheumatology 1990 Criteria for the Classification of Fibromyalgia.
This is the book that changes everything for patients, healthcare providers, and everyone with an interest in truly understanding the cause of fibromyalgia and chronic widespread pain.
In The Missing Pieces of the Fibromyalgia Puzzle, author Jeff Sarkozi, M.D., F.R.C.P.C., F.A.C.R. provides the revolutionary insight and understanding that redefines the landscape of fibromyalgia knowledge, diagnosis, and treatment by exposing the fallacy of pain from nowhere, revealing the failure of the fibromyalgia diagnosis, elucidating the true cause of fibromyalgia pain, and offering real treatment for what’s really going on.
The Missing Pieces of the Fibromyalgia Puzzle is the most ground-breaking and transformational book ever written on fibromyalgia and chronic widespread musculoskeletal pain. It does what no other book or publication has ever been capable of doing. Through original, cutting edge clinical research results and evidence-based analysis, it actually identifies the cause of pain in fibromyalgia, the mechanism by which it evolves, how it is modulated, and how to effectively treat it.
This compelling, scholarly, yet immensely accessible new knowledge demystifies fibromyalgia and chronic widespread musculoskeletal pain and makes everything that is unknown about the relationships between pain, tenderness, disability, sleep, weight related issues, psychological and psychosocial disturbances, and sexual difficulties clear and understandable.
Written for patients and healthcare providers, The Missing Pieces of the Fibromyalgia Puzzle will transform the lives of individuals afflicted with fibromyalgia and chronic widespread pain. Its enlightening blend of traditional and complementary therapies guides and empowers patients and their healthcare providers with the most unique, integrated, and thoroughly effective self-managed wellness recovery program ever published. It provides the substrate of truly justified hope and faith in the ability of individuals to transcend the suffering of fibromyalgia to make positive changes in their health and overall well-being.
Jeff Sarkozi, M.D., F.R.C.P.C., F.A.C.R., is a rheumatologist expert specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of fibromyalgia and chronic widespread musculoskeletal pain for thousands of patients over more than two decades. The news release for this book looks like a whole lot of filler. The website for this book looks like a whole lot of filler. It does have a “fibromyalgia pain store” that has some pillows and some arch supports (wtf?). And the glowing recommendations (all two of them) don’t exactly come from a “who’s who” of fibromyalgia. Maybe if they send you a free copy to review, I’d read it…but right now I have a bookcase full of fibro books, and the advertising for this one doesn’t exactly make me want to run out and buy it.
Maybe I’m a little grumpy because I just got done with the garage sale from h*ll and I’m in a ridiculous amount of pain. We have a 2300 sq.ft. house and I needed to get rid of stuff…and none of the charities out here pick stuff up. So I craigslisted it for free. What’s wrong with free? Who knows. But it was a long day and I still have lots to get rid of. Maybe the new owners will need a couple of bookcases and at least a dozen vases. Oh and literally hundreds of CDs and PS games? Hate to take them to the dump…

This sounds like an excellent book. Being a fibromyalgia specalist, I am always looking for more education for my patients.

I appreciate your healthy skepticism about this book. The release and the website raise a lot of questions for me – especially as the language is almost trying to suggest that the methods in the book might “solve” someone’s fibro suffering.
Also, a book claiming to have found the cause of pain, where no other actual research has – is a pretty bold claim to make. The book also appears very amateur.
It would be worth a read just to see what kind of magical fairy dust this guy is offering up – who knows, he might have good advice, but I’m sure all the grandiose claims he’s making can’t be true.

Lauren I had the chance to meet Dr. Sarkozi and I can tell you he is absolutely passionate about the research that went into his book and about helping people with FM. I admire that very much. I have yet to tackle his book – a tough read with a lot of technical information. I think with more and more research proving that FM is likely neurological, I am less enthusiastic about his rheumy based research. His belief is that our pain stems from osteoarthritis, but I for one do not have osteoarthritis, although I do know several people with FM who do.
If only there was one book, one person, one technique, or one pill to cure us all. Highly unlikely! You are right, healthy skepticism is good!

I’ve researched and treated fibromyalgia extensively. I originially thought fibromyalgia was a muscle problem, but have learned that it is central nervous system disorder that causes dysautonomia. I’ve have great success treating fibromyalgia using a dietary, orthomolecular supplementation, and functional neurology approach. I am in the process of writing a book on fibromyalgia and my approach due out this year. You can learn more about what we are doing by visiting my blog http://www.drbradshook.com which also has videos, or visit our practice website at http://www.alliancechiropracticcenter.com or http://www.drrodneyslusher.com. Please let me know if you have any questions, our treatment is based on the latest research in several fields of study including functional medicine and neuroscience.
